Maybe you’ve seen them before, maybe not. A “Card in a Box” is a pop up kind of card that is quite impressive and yet quite simple (even if though it may look hard). You may be thinking, okay, it looks kind of cool, but you can’t mail it.
Oh Yes you can! It fold flat and fits in a regular envelope.
This is how it looks folded up and there is room on the back of the card for you to write a little note and sign it. (I’ve stamped leaves and acorns on the back).
So here we go with a tutorial on how to make the box:
Use 1/2 sheet of card stock, that’s 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″.
Score the 8 1/2″ side at 2″, 4″, 6″ and 8″
Score the 5 1/2″ side at 2 3/4″
Cut two inserts 3″ x 1″ and score 1/2″ from each end.
Cut cardstock on dotted lines and fold on solid lines, cutting off top section of skinny tab. Fold inserts on score lines folding one end forward and one end back to make a “Z” fold.
Put Fast Fuse on the remaining skinny tab with the card laying flat on the table and the skinny tab on the lower right corner. Notice the Fast Fuse is not sticking the tab to the rest of the card, the adhesive is on top.
Fold left side of card on top of the skinny tab that has the fast Fuse on it. This is the easiest way to get the sides and bottom to line up.
Fold down three of the flaps leaving the fourth one standing tall. Now you’ve got a box!
Put Fast Fuse on both outside edges of both inserts.
Visualize splitting the inside of the box into thirds. Now, attach insert to inside of box with one end attached to the left side and one tab attached to the right side of the box.
Do the same with the second insert. These inserts are what you use to attach you decorative pieces and give it dimension.
Cut 1/4″ strips of Window Sheet and attach your decorative elements with glue dots, then put a glue dot on the other end of the widow sheet and attach to the backside of the insert. Continue doing this with window sheet strips and decorative pieces until you get the desired results.
For this card I used the Autumn Accents Big Shot Die with Crushed Curry, Cajun Craze, Cherry Cobbler and Old Olive leaves and Early Espresso acorns. I crumpled them a bit to make them look more like real leaves. I decorated the flaps of the box with 2 1/2″ x 1 3/4″ pieces of Cajun Craze that I ran through the Woodgrain embossing folder. The front flap was stamped with “For All Things and Wetlands stamp sets.
I’d love for you to try your hand at creating a Card in a Box. Give it a try and send me a photo, I just may post a few on my blog. Need a little more inspiration for these? Check back over the next few days and I’ll be sharing a few more samples.
